If you are in Adelaide this week and like to see musicians getting antagonistic in public, we suggest you head down to the Worldsend Hotel on Thursday 28th. GPO will be duking it out with our odd musical bedfellows, The Aves.
The situation is this... Both The Aves and GPO have been described as figures of the Adelaide 'post-garage' scene. You can thank local radio and street press for that one. We're not too sure what it all means, but the media do like the idea of scenes, ground-swelling, and applying terms like 'post-garage' to things.
It seems to encompass a collection of groups that sit somewhere between garage and punk, never quite settling on new wave. Namely... The Honey Pies, The Sunbirds, The Aves and GPO. It's a cultural revolution, apparently... Oh dear.
Of these bands, the most competitive by far are the two latter. So, even though it is entirely unclear what defines the post-garage scene, we are both heading to the Worldsend to decide who does it better. The Aves think they perfectly encapsulate the ethos of post-garage, and couldn't possibly be upstaged. They are wrong, of course, but like most of us, they can't be told.
Derek, our beloved manager, tried to tell us not to get involved. "Let the whores have their trinkets," he said. We presume he was talking about the press, not The Aves. One never can tell with Derek. Anyway, despite his protestations (and to be honest, partly because of them... riling Derek is awfully good for a laugh), we will be fronting up to take them on. It's all very tense and everyone is taking this battle terribly seriously. Really. You should too, for it may well define the terms of popular culture for years to come... Well, you know... it might.
Anyway, it will also be a very good gig. Despite everything, The Aves are actually quite the band. No, really, they are. We won't stoop to the level of gutter raking that's expected of us. That is, we would, but Derek made us promise we wouldn't. He gets so emotional! We'll keep our integrity in face of it all. Of course, we'll still win whatever it is we're battling for. But you knew that. Who knows, there might be a cup or something!
Mixing of the new release, Life Is Cheap, is well underway and going rather well, thank you for asking. At last count there were approximately two tracks left to tackle before the whole things goes off for mastering and packaging up in a sparkly commercial skin. Exciting, eh?
Of course, our manager Derek feels that the eager fans, who have been waiting so patiently for all these developments to develop, deserve something to reward their loyalty and dedication to the GPO cause. He is right, naturally.
So, in case you have missed it, we'd like to let you know that the second track from the sessions, To Gideon, All the Best, God, is available for your listening and/or downloading pleasure. You never know, you might like to download things without listening to them.
Anywho, it is an unmastered version, but that only increases its urgency, right? You know it. We do hope you like it. We think you will. Life Is Cheap isn't far away now. Keep an appropriate facial feature out for it. But don't leave it out overnight. We'd hate anything to go astray.
Oh, and Derek says "hello"... So hooray for speech therapy!
